CANARY ISLANDS

When it comes to traveling the world more or less everyone has his or her own list of the destinations yet to visit. Most of these lists contain destinations such as Paris, Florence, Machu Picchu, India etc. but there are thousands of places that almost never reach our top 10’s or best of’s. Nevertheless every now and than a chance is given to us to explore such places. An experience like that happened to me few months ago when I almost spontaneously decided to visit my dear friends who took an exchange semester from their faculties in Croatia and went to Canary Islands.

Canary Islands, a world of its own, were stunning. Going that far to the south in early March brought me a summer experience sooner than usually expected. A world of diversities as I recall swept me of my feet. Visiting an archipelago took me all the way from cold and windy mountain peeks to sunny sandy beaches and even deserts. The peaceful life of this Spanish tax free oasis was a nice and refreshing surprise compare to the fogy and tiring everyday life of the Croatian capital I left only a day ago.

Watching the nature was overwhelming. Most of the landscape was incredibly green and bursting with wildlife. It felt almost like where ever we decided to go the islands were trying to tell us that they are not ordinary islands and a strange feeling of standing on sleeping volcano was omnipresent. It was only in the mountains that what we felt the rest of the time became obvious. Huge canyons and crater leftovers warned us about the chaotic and violent history of these beautiful places. I must confess that visiting towns and villages across the islands wasn’t less interesting at all but it was nature that dominated wherever we went. Even in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a place that in a way reminded me of Barcelona, tall trees and beautiful parks overpowered the great masterpieces of architecture done by some of the most famous architects of our era. In the end I simply fell in love with Canary Islands, not for their popularity, tax free shopping or great rum but for the nature incomparable to anything I have seen so far.

Promatranje prirode preplavilo me osjećajem ugode.
